Una proteina potrebbe spiegare perch\u00e9 tumori e Alzheimer difficilmente si manifestano nella stessa persona. Si chiama cistatina C<\/strong> ed \u00e8 stata individuata al termine di uno studio durato 15 anni condotto sui topi. La molecola, prodotta dalle cellule tumorali, \u00e8 in grado di favorire la degradazione delle placche amiloidi<\/strong> che si accumulano nel cervello, uno dei principali segni distintivi della malattia neurodegenerativa.<\/p>\n

La scoperta emerge da una ricerca dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Scienza e Tecnologia di Huazhong<\/strong>, in Cina, pubblicata sulla rivista Cell<\/em>, e potrebbe aprire la strada allo sviluppo di nuovi farmaci capaci di sfruttare lo stesso meccanismo protettivo.<\/p>\n

Il team guidato da Youming Lu<\/strong> ha trapiantato nei topi affetti da Alzheimer tre diversi tipi di tumore umano \u2014 polmone, prostata e colon \u2014 osservando che negli animali non si formavano le tipiche placche generate dall\u2019aggregazione di proteine mal ripiegate. Come riportato anche da Nature<\/em>, i ricercatori hanno quindi indagato tra le proteine prodotte dai tumori in grado di superare la barriera emato-encefalica<\/strong>, il sistema di difesa che limita l\u2019accesso delle sostanze al cervello.<\/p>\n

Dopo circa sei anni di analisi, l\u2019unica candidata individuata \u00e8 stata la cistatina C. Esperimenti successivi hanno dimostrato che questa proteina si lega ai componenti delle placche amiloidi, attivando un\u2019altra proteina chiamata Trem2<\/strong>, presente su alcune cellule immunitarie cerebrali. Una volta attivate, queste cellule riescono a riconoscere e degradare le placche.<\/p>\n

La scoperta \u00e8 particolarmente rilevante perch\u00e9 da tempo la comunit\u00e0 scientifica cerca molecole in grado di attivare Trem2 come possibile terapia contro l\u2019Alzheimer, finora con risultati limitati.
